Miró at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park

This bank holiday I had the pleasure of going to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) for the first time. I’d heard good things already from friends and colleagues over the years so it’s been on my to-do list for quite a while. So last Sunday I finally bit the bullet and went… and what a place. I loved it, not only is there a great piece of architecture in the form of the main building, that’s complete with a stunning underground gallery and manicured gardens, but it is also in a beautiful countryside setting. Truly picturesque. And dotted all around the gardens and the surrounding landscape are sculptures from the likes of Antony Gormley, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth to name but a few.
However the real draw for me was to see the largest collection of work from Joan Miró ever assembled. It’s been described by the Miró family as “the most important exhibition of Joan Miró ever staged”. Usually his work is split between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, but for a limited period it’s in Yorkshire! Just outside Wakefield to be exact… strange but true.
There are over 100 works of art on show by the great man, including monumental and painted bronzes, assembled sculptures and paintings. And all with his attractive and distinct Catalan flair.
Gotta say, I was simply blown away by the Miró exhibition, I filled my head and senses full of work from one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. In the underground gallery the first room I walked in had 5 large sculptures that gave me goose pimples – yes, it’s that good. The sculptures on show in the gardens were just as impressive – such as the above image snapped on my iPhone.
And after I’d finished looking around the indoor area and things Miró I walked around the entire park, got some much needed fresh air and soaked up all the other eclectic and equally impressive pieces.
So make the effort and go enjoy a great day out at YSP before the ‘Miró: Sculptor’ exhibition ends. You have until 06.01.13, and it’s free entry (except for a £7.50 parking fee) – so, no excuses!
